Thus Spoke Zarathustra, released in the 1880s, stands as Nietzsche’s most renowned and unique piece. It intertwines poetry, parables, and sermon-like speeches, delving into profound themes such as self-overcoming, forging personal meaning, and the notion of the “Übermensch” (often interpreted as “overman” or “superman”). Nietzsche's powerful declaration that “God is dead” resonates throughout the text.
In this thought-provoking work, Nietzsche posits that the essence of existence lies not in religious doctrines or passive submission, but in a vigorous life force that is passionate, chaotic, and free. By transcending traditional beliefs, he ushers us into a new modern era, where the onus is on each individual to carve out their own significance.
Join us for the first of two meetups, where we will dive into parts 1 and 2 of Thus Spoke Zarathustra, covering up to chapter 44. You can access the book online via the link below. Please note that the translation is from the early 1900s, so seeking a more contemporary version from your library or bookstore may enhance your reading experience.
About the Group
The Stockholm Philosophy Study Group welcomes all who are interested in thoughtful discussions about philosophical concepts. Previous experience in philosophy is not required. However, we kindly ask that participants read the text beforehand, as our conversations will center around it. This is a collaborative space where we learn from and listen to one another, focusing on deliberation rather than debate. If the group size is large, let's ensure everyone has a voice! We explore a variety of philosophical texts, some of which can be challenging to grasp. If you find certain parts difficult, fret not—we will work through them together.
To connect with fellow participants between meetups, feel free to join our Discord server! By joining, you can also participate in voting for our upcoming readings.
Looking forward to seeing you at the meetup!
