🌟 Join us for an unforgettable evening honoring women in jazz! 🌟

Dive into the rich tapestry of American history at the Making History, Making Change Lecture Series, a national initiative between the Smithsonian and its Affiliate organizations. In tribute to International Women's Day, we are excited to welcome Dr. Krystal Klingenberg to Snug Harbor Cultural Center & Botanical Garden for an inspiring exploration of the legendary jazz singer Ella Fitzgerald.

đŸŽ¶ Event Highlights:

Dr. Klingenberg, a curator of music at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History and host of the museum’s Collected podcast, will take us on a captivating journey through Ella Fitzgerald’s life. We will explore her extraordinary artistry and the remarkable legacy she left as both a common and exceptional figure of her time.

✹ The evening will also feature a musical tribute curated by Jeanine Otis, showcasing an all-female cast of performers who will commemorate the vital role of women in jazz through a blend of poetry and song. Ms. Otis dedicates this performance to the spirit of Sajda Musawwir Ladner, founder of the Staten Island JAZZ Festival.

đŸŽ€ Performers Include:

  • Bernice Brooks (drums)
  • Kal Ferretti (trumpet)
  • Yuuki Koike (saxophone)
  • Jeanine Otis (curator, narrator, vocalist)
  • Miho Sasaki (piano)
  • Niranjana (Nina) Shankar (vocalist)
  • Maya Gilbert Smith/Maya Da Poet (poet)
