🎶 What is a Chantey Sing?

Old-time sailors, isolated on long voyages, kept their spirits high by singing together. 🎶 They created a repertoire of work songs, fun songs, and storytelling songs that fostered community and connection. At the South Street Seaport Museum, we continue this cherished tradition, blending old chanteys with modern lyrics. As our Senior Director of Program and Education, Laura Norwitz, eloquently puts it, “Sailing ships were a melting pot of cultures, and the songs helped sailors unite as one.”
