🎷 "It’s All About the Ladies" 🎶
"It's All About the Ladies" is a heartfelt tribute to “The Hidden Ladies of Jazz” who have long been overlooked—female instrumentalists, composers, songwriters, and lyricists in the jazz genre that haven’t received the spotlight they truly deserve. This includes remarkable women like Mary Lou Williams, Kay Swift, Nancy Hamilton, Dorothy Fields, Marian McPartland, Peggy Lee, Ann Ronell, and many more. These women have played pivotal roles in shaping jazz and have mentored several icons we now know as jazz legends, including Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespie, and Coltrane.
The project commenced in 2014 when jazz vocalist, composer, and lyricist Anna Pauline was tasked with assembling an all-female band for a concert on International Women’s Day. The success of that concert led to the formation of the current “Sisters of Jazz”—a collective of established, professional female musicians from both Denmark and Sweden.
The inspiration for the program “It’s All About the Ladies” came to Anna Pauline during a visit to London’s Tate Gallery, which showcased paintings and portraits of lesser-known female artists contemporary to giants like Gauguin, Monet, and Van Gogh.
Since its inception, Sisters of Jazz have toured Sweden, Denmark, and Germany, garnering rave reviews in both Sydsvenskan and Orkesterjournalen. The project also birthed an EP featuring four tracks plus an additional bonus track, released officially at Palladium in Malmö in the autumn of 2017.
Earlier this autumn, the celebrated band released their first full-length album, “The Hidden Ladies of Jazz”, containing 12 tracks composed by female composers, lyricists, and instrumentalists. Many of the arrangements are crafted by Anna Pauline herself.
