In the play A Journey into Shadows – 1888, we explore the lives of residents of a historical hospital near what is now Caroli City. This institution housed individuals facing challenges such as dementia and epilepsy, often functioning as a social care facility. Facilities included workshops, a weaving room, gardens, a chapel, and a cemetery—all utilized until 1935 when operations were moved to Sankt Lars in Lund.

The story follows the lives of several residents and the head of the women's department during the hot summer of 1888, a year filled with significant events as news from the outside world reached them. Amidst their daily lives, events such as the burning of the wool factory “Doffeln,” the tragic suicide of Victoria Benedictsson, and the infamous “Jack the Ripper” crimes in London unfold.

The characters are fictional but inspired by real life stories, ranging from a noblewoman with delusions to an alcoholic beggar. The narrative interlaces seriousness with humor, enriched by period songs performed live on the piano. Our goal is to shine a light on those seldom seen in history and to remember an overlooked chapter of Malmö’s past.
