🎻 About the Cello da Spalla:
Dating back between the 17th and early 18th centuries, the Cello da Spalla was a favored instrument among violinists due to its versatile range. It was commonly used for bass lines, accompaniments, and even solo passages.
Composers created sonatas and concertos specifically for this instrument, and it played a vital role in church and chamber cantatas. It is noted that cellists/violinists from Northern Italy traveled across Europe, leaving their mark in Catalonia, and it was shaped by notable musicians like Caldara, Bononcini, and Dall'Abaco.
Researcher Diana Roche from Barcelona is uncovering significant production of church cantatas by Catalan composers, highlighting the five-string cello's role in solo and obligatory parts during the late 17th to mid-18th century.
Some of the early cellos da spalla have survived to this day, with noteworthy examples crafted by Johann Christian Hoffman, a friend of Johann Sebastian Bach.
🎸 A Special Note:
Maestro A. Vitolo will perform on a Cello da Spalla made by noted luthier Alessandro Visintini.
Don't miss this unique opportunity to experience this extraordinary musical journey!
