Join us for a compelling talk on the haunting story of Hannah Read, a woman from Shearsby who faced unimaginable scrutiny in the early 19th century. On 21 April 1825, Hannah allegedly pushed her husband, James Read, into the Grand Union Canal near Foxton, leading to a trial on 3 August 1825 at the Leicester Assizes for his murder. Just two days later, she was sentenced to execution and met her fate publicly on 5 August, right outside the Bridewell on Infirmary Square in Leicester.
Hannah's story extends beyond her tragic end; she was the last female in Leicester to undergo the horrific practice of dissection after execution. This event offers a deep dive into a dark chapter of local history that sheds light on societal views and punishment practices of the time.
