Gnawa music, renowned for its hypnotic rhythms and spiritual essence, melds traditional Arab-Muslim and Amazigh influences. This mesmerizing genre originates from Saharan Africans brought to Morocco, known for its unique instruments like the three-stringed Gambre and the large iron castanets, Karkabas. The music is deeply intertwined with healing rituals and has received widespread acclaim both nationally and internationally.

Maalem signifies a master musician and spiritual guide essential for leading the healing ceremonies known as lila, similar in role to gospel music priests.

Taylor Higgs spent time immersing himself in the rich culture and traditions of Gnawa music with Maalem Youssef, culminating in an E.P. blending Western instrumentation with blues and flamenco.
